Present: Karissa & Elijah Canfield, Theresa Furget, Julie Pelletier, Thad Bogart, Phil Crutchfield, Paulina Poplawska and Maureen Posler.  With guests Carrie Cavanaugh and Bryan Gutierrez.
Thad called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM
  1. Additions & Corrections: None
  2. Minutes: No additions or corrections.  Phil made a motion to accept the minutes and Karissa seconded the motion.  Motion approved.
  3. New Members: Paige George joined KVCC in December 2022.  Her initiation will take place at the January dinner meeting.  Theresa reported that the Sundowners Civitan, south of Lansing, will be closing and several of the members will join KVCC. Our new members are Jill Lyon, Nancy Bracey, Vicky Hastay, and Marta Ford.  Due to logistics, these members probably won’t attend most of our meetings, however, perhaps will participate in some projects (i.e.: Charity Poker) or some dinner meetings. Maureen will add our newest members to the email distribution list for meeting minutes and newsletters.
  4. Guest Speakers: Thad introduced two guest speakers attending the meeting. Carrie Cavanaugh from the South Lyon Center for Active Adults and Bryan Gutierrez, from the Huron Valley Film Organization.  Please see below, under Project Updates, for community opportunities they talked about.
  5. Treasurer’s Report: Theresa reviewed both General account and the MP account of the Treasury report, in Diana’s absence. Phil made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report and Maureen seconded the motion.  The motion passed.
  6. Correspondence: None
  7. Project Updates:
    1. Pizza & Pop with the Civitans: Carrie Cavanaugh talked about an opportunity to interact with the South Lyon senior community. The Center for Active Adults has about 3,500 senior and active members. The group is located in the South Lyon High School.  Carrie and Thad talked about how we could introduce KVCC to the seniors.  Thad & Carrie decided on a “Pizza & Pop with the Civitans” event to be held on February 1, 2023 at 12:30 PM.  KVCC could talk about our club and some of our current projects. Since the Center for Active Adults newsletter had such a long lead time, Thad went ahead and committed the club to provide pizza & pop and members of the club can volunteer to talk about our club. While a motion was being discussed to fund this event, Phil brought up that a previous motion had been done for an event that never took place.  Thus, the current motion when made should address this.  Theresa made a motion to spend up to $200 for pizza and pop, from the General Account, for this event and that this current motion would supersede any prior motion previously made .  Julie seconded the motion.  If you can volunteer to hand out literature about the club or speak at the event, please contact Thad.
    2.  Huron Valley Film Organization: Bryan Gutierrez, currently with Keller Williams Realty in Milford was the second guest speaker.  Bryan came to speak about the Huron Valley Film Organization. The organization has taken over and refurbished the theater in Milford and would like to promote its use for events. Very small groups to large groups of about 150 individuals can rent the theater for event use. There is an area between the first row of seats and the screen where an area that can fit 3 larger tables (about 6 feet) end-to-end and several rows wide for meetings.  Food can be arranged or be brought in or, if preferred, concessions can be provided. Events can include a movie or not have a movie. Movie rental is outside of the first run movies currently being shown at the theater.
    3.  Holiday Recap:
      1. Inflatables at Inspiration Park: A lot of inflatables were at Inspiration Park. 5 Club members set up the inflatables; Sue Misener took them down, dried them out and is storing them.
      2. Christmas Tree at Abbey Park: Cheryl, Theresa & Diana, Nazmiye, Tolga, Toprak & Vivian put up the KVCC tree at Abbey Park. While the tree did not win the competition, several of the residents commented on how much they enjoyed the tree. Cheryl took down the tree.
    4. Desert Angels Packing Party: The packing party was a huge success! As noted in the last newsletter, the large number of community members that showed up to help was unbelievable! Between community members, students & club members, at least 68 people showed up!  We had allowed for 2 hours to pack the boxes and were done in under an hour. We packed 232 boxes for the troops overseas!
    5.  Inspired Movement (Digital Playspace): Thad is the point person on this project. Thad reported that he again contacted the school liaison, however has not had any response.  The club received a grant for this project and it must be completed and a report turned in by April 2023, so perhaps we need another approach to making the contact happen.
    6. SW Detroit Library Project: Thad reported that the teacher that Thad in introduced to the KVCC has moved to another school so the library project is no longer one of our projects. Thad talked to the principal to see if there is s another way that our club can assist the school.
    7.  Charity Poker:  The next Charity poker dates are Thursday through Sunday on May 11-14 and Thursday through Sunday on June 15-18.  For the first date, on Thursday and Friday, volunteers will work 6:30 PM – 2:00 AM and on Saturday & Sunday, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM.  For the June dates, the times are reversed and Thursday and Fridays Volunteers work from10:00 AM – 6:00 PM and on Saturday & Sunday from 6:30 PM – 2:00 AM.  Please mark your calendars to help. At the last Charity Poker, a few members had to work multiple or double shifts because we did not have e enough volunteers.  This event is probably our largest fundraiser, so we need everyone’s help.  You do not need to know anything about playing poker to work. Several of the jobs are taking chips to players, which is easy. Elijah will send out a signup in April for the May event.
    8. Adopt-A-Highway:  The next dates to clean the highway are April 22-30, July 15-23 and Sept. 23rd to Oct. 1, 2023.
  8. Upcoming Projects:
    1. Pizza & Pop with the Civitans: February 1st at 12:30 PM
    2. Partner with Plymouth Canton Civitan Club.  Focus Hope Dates: May 20 & Oct. 14
    3. Charity Poker Dates:
      1. May 11th – 14th
      2. June 15th – June 18th
    4. High School Essay Contest: Elijah brought up the high school essay contest and since we submitted our essay requirements to the school district late last year, we are going to start now. Maureen agreed to take the lead on this project.
    5. 2023-2024 Officer Elections: Discussion about elections.  Thad stepped in as President this year since Sue was unable to continue.  That left the President-Elect position open.  Thad will do two years as President if no one else is interested and the club will look for a new President-Elect.

Next Meeting is a dinner meeting at Teresita’s Mexican Grill on January 26, 2023.  Teresita’s is located at 56310 Grand River, New Hudson, MI

Phil Crutchfield made a motion to adjourn made at 7:50 PM. Elijah seconded, and the motion passed.
Minutes respectfully taken by Maureen Posler on January 12th and submitted on January 17th, 2023.
