3/10/2022

Present: Julie Pelletier, Karissa & Elijah Canfield, Thad Bogert, Cheryl Van Vliet, Hal Hultman, Vivian VanVliet, Theresa Furget, Sue Misener and Maureen Posler
Elijah called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM.

  1. Additions & Corrections: None.
  2. Minutes of Last Meeting: Since the January minutes were tabled at the last meeting, Hal made a motion to accept the minutes of January 13 & February 9, 2022.  Theresa Furget seconded the motion and both minutes were approved.
  3. Treasurer’s Report:  Theresa Furget will act as Treasurer until another treasurer is found or elected.  Theresa reviewed the Treasurer’s report that was passed out.  Theresa believed the report was up to date with the exception of a potential debit for the charity poker State of Michigan application for the May 2022 event.  Maureen made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report and Theresa seconded the motion.  The motion was approved.
  4. Correspondence: None
  5. Anniversary Pins: 25-Year pins were presented to Vivian & Cheryl for their long seniority/membership in Civitan.
  6. Club Elections for 2022-2023: The President-Elect & Treasurer positions will need to be filled.  The treasurer position is the most important since we currently have a President elect for the 2022-2023 year.
  7. NC Civitan Membership Retention & Growth Committee: Take a moment to check out the KVCC website.  Elijah and Lisa have completed some great improvements. Meeting minutes can be viewed on the website along with a calendar of event and pictures of club events.  Recommend the website to anyone expressing interest in the club.  We are hoping the improved and updated website will be a recruiting opportunity.
  8. Civitan Youth Entrepreneurs Committee: Elijah has been instrumental in moving this project along.  As you may remember, there was concern that the youth committee might conflict or compete with the Farmers Market.  On March 14, 2022 a proposal was made to the South Lyon City Council and a request for approval for the committee.  Our request was approved!  Thanks for Elijah for all of his work getting this project off the ground.  Elijah will update the website and hopefully this will be another recruiting source for participants.  Participants will be kids K-12 and kids will need to complete an application.  Elijah and Karissa will coordinate the application process including interviewing the kids, providing tents, tables and chairs.  If there is a good turnout, perhaps a food truck could be included.  This is another opportunity to promote our club in the community and possibly attract new members.  Cheryl was also successful in obtaining liability insurance the Civitan International for the group.
  9. District News: During the International convention in July 2020.  The election to revise the bylaws (which would have eliminated the districts) was defeated, thus, the existing structure with districts remained. As a refresh, the current structure is the International, Regional and Districts. In January 2022, the Civitan International executive board then made a decision to eliminate the districts. Their reasoning was that many districts were struggling to obtain individuals to hold district offices. And they felt that the region/regionals could fill this need.  Recently, Wendy Rogers as governor and Patti Beloit as the governor-elect were going to meet with the other districts governors and governor elects to see if they can prevent this from happening.  We’ll have to wait until the April meeting to find out what happened or is going to happen.
  10. Health & Wellness Project Grant:  Thad has taken the lead on this and applied for a grant from South Lyon to fund an initiative titled “Inspired Movement Project”.  The project is to promote physical activity by implementing Digital Play Spaces that inspire participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities to interact or play with objects projected on a wall or floor using their hands or feet.  KVCC would provide a play spot to South Lyon Community Schools at no cost to the district.  Thad passed out an excellent summary that describes Digital Play Spaces and a tentative budget.  Please see Thad for more information or a copy of the summary.

Projects Updates:
  1. Charity Poker: The next Charity Poker event will be March 24-27, 2022 at Vision Lanes in Westland.  The Charity Poker events are a major fundraising source for KVCC. We would not find another such opportunity to generate funds if this falls through. The next scheduled charity poker is May 19-22, 2022.  Please block the May dates on your calendars to try and volunteer.  Currently, all the shifts are being covered by a handful of club members.
  2. North Central District Spring Meeting: This meeting is scheduled to be held April 22-24 at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 1921 Pipestone Rd., Benton Harbor, MI 49085. The phone # is 269-827-5878. If you are interested in attending, you should have booked your hotel room by March 12th and you should register by April 1st.
  3. South Lyon Creek Clean-up: Club members interested in participating in this community event can register to volunteer on their web site.
  4. Desert Angels: A “packing party” will be held on April 28 from 6:30-8:00 at the Lyon Township Center, located at 58000 Grand River, New Hudson, MI 48165. Desert Angels is a local charity and “miracle boxes” (care packages) are sent to our overseas troops.  As a club we will collect donations that will put a smile on the faces of our troops when they open their box.  A thank-you letter, showing our support will be included in each box.  Each miracle box costs approximately $20 in postage, which the club will raise funds to cover. If you know of a business that could sponsor sample toiletries, snacks, etc., please ask if they would be willing to donate. Also, please donate what you can individually to help fill the boxes. In addition, if you purchase a bag of Biggby coffee, Karissa’s stores will match the donation with a second bag of coffee. The goal is to reach 50 bags of coffee donations. Attached is a flyer for the Packing event. Please pass out to your friends, family and local businesses.
  5. Adopt-A-Highway: The highway clean-up is scheduled for April 30th.  Meet in the Biggby parking lot in New Hudson at 10:00 AM.
  6. Camp Civitan: Camp Civitan will be held June 9-12, 2022.  Cheryl was pleased to report that there was only a small increase in cost per camper for 2022.  The increase was from $157-$168/camper. Craft planning is underway. The first meeting has taken place.  If you know anyone interested in becoming a camp counselor or a disabled camper interested in attending camp, please contact Cheryl.   Cheryl brought Michigan raffle tickets for members to sell or buy.  The raffle tickets are a major fundraiser for Camp Civitan.  Plan on purchasing tickets at the next meeting and taking tickets to sell to friends and family.
  7. Focus Hope: The next box packing event is scheduled for October 8th.

Next Meetings:
The next meeting will be a dinner meeting on March 24, 2022.  The dinner meeting will be held at the Pinz Bowling Center, 700N. Lafayette Rd., South Lyon, MI.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:00 PM
