Present: Cheryl VanVliet, Hal Hultman, Maureen Posler, Diana Bolton, Phil Crutchfield, Julie Pelletier, Kris Krzyzanski, Carol Sienko,  Rich Roberts, Paige George, Karissa & Elijah Canfield, Nazmiye Yapici, Paulina Poplawska, Thad Bogert, Guest: Kyle Zimpleman, and Theresa Furget.

Cheryl called the meeting to order at 6:40 PM.  Cheryl ran the meeting until Thad was able to run the meeting after setting up the equipment to show a demo of the Inspired Movement program.
  1. Additions & Corrections: Karissa added Volunteer Opportunities under 5 o.
  2. March Minutes: Phil made a motion and Hal seconded it to accept the March minutes.  Motion passed.
  3. Treasurer’s Report-Diana: Diana went over the financial statement for the general and MP accounts.  She also went over the accounts for money spent (so far) on the Inspired Movement project and money yet to be spent on the Youth Entrepreneur Market (YEM).  At previous business meetings motions had been made to spend funds.  This allows her to keep track of how much and what has been spent so far.  Members thought this was a very good idea and appreciate Diana’s efforts in this endeavor.  Rich made a motion and Phil seconded it to accept the treasurer’s report.  Motion passed.
  4. Correspondence: Elijah read a letter from the past president of Civitan International (CI) Dan Brown (2021-2022) thanking the club for all the work it has done.  Elijah next read another letter from Dan Brown awarding Kris his 45th year pin as a Civitan .  Theresa also welcomed Carol Sienko as the newest club member.
  5. Project Updates:
    1. Region 6 District North Central Meeting April 28th-29th-Cheryl:To be held at the Hampton Inn and Suites in Benton Harbor, MI.  The MI area clubs will be gathering along with the Iowa and Minnesota clubs for an update from Patti Belote the Region 6 District Director. Cheryl, Hal, and Theresa will be attending.
    2. Civitan International Convention-Cheryl: In  Indianapolis, August 17th-20th, at the Hyatt Regency room rate of $149 (plus tax and fee) per night.  No virtual attendance this year. Further info can be found on page 16 of the February Civitan Magazine or at: www.civitan.org/convention. Cheryl, Hal, and Theresa will be attending.
    3. Youth Leadership & Diversity Conference (YLDC) July 24th-29th-Kris: This is to be held July 24th-29th at the Trine University in Angola, IN.  This is the 51st year the conference has been held. The cost is $375.  The Plymouth-Canton Civitan Club pays  $190, and the delegates will pay the rest-$185.  Paige will contact the two high schools in getting participants.  Elijah made a motion and Kris seconded it that the club will sponsor up to two delegates and cover $190 from the general account. Discussion concerned the club covering all the costs for the delegates to attend.  It was further discussed that if delegates have some responsibility in payment, then they get more out of the conference.  Further discussion if delegates are unable to afford their portion of the fee, then they could volunteer at a club event and the money should come out of the MP account. Elijah modified/amended his motion and Kris seconded it, that the club would sponsor up to two delegates with the club paying $190 from the MP account and the delegates paying the remaining $185.  If a delegate is unable to pay the $185, then the club would pay the remainder $185, and the delegate would volunteer at a club event.  Motion passed.
    4. Camp Civitan June 8th-11th- Cheryl:   Camp Mishawaka located at 6475 Wilkins Rd., Hastings, MI. 49058. Cheryl has 38 campers so far, with a few new campers.  Need extra workers for check-in on Thursday and on Friday to help with Carnival games. Collecting prizes (such as bubbles, hats, crayons, coloring books etc.) for Bingo and the Carnival games. In need of a RN and counselors, especially males.  Camp costs $215 per camper and Cheryl has six scholarships. If you’re able to help during the day, contact Cheryl at 313-460-3194, she can really use the extra help. This is the camp’s 32nd year. 
    5. KVCC Scholarship-Maureen: So far, they have six applicants, four from S. Lyon HS and two from S. Lyon East HS.  Serving on the committee with Maureen are Paige, Paulina, and Cheryl.  They’ll start reading the essays after April 19th and select a winner from each high school.  They’re looking at all students regardless of their GPA or whether they’re bound for college or vocational school after high school.
    6. Charity Poker May 11th-14th-Elijah: This will be held at Vision Lanes located at 38250 Ford Rd., in Westland, 48185.  Thursday and Friday hours are 6:30 PM-2AM and Saturday/Sunday hours are 10 AM-6 PM. No knowledge of poker is needed, the club just handles the record keeping, poker chips and money.  It’s a lot of hours over four days, however, the profit the club receives benefits the community by the club’s charitable donations.  Consider volunteering and do not rely upon the six-eight members that have shouldered the working of this event in the past. Elijah will set up the Signup Genius app for members to work shifts.  Looking for four to five members per day.
    7. Youth Entrepreneur Market (YEM) May 13th-Elijah: The first event will take place on Saturday May 13th from 10 AM-3 PM.  Set up will start at 9 AM.  So far, Elijah has 5-6 youths signed up.  He has submitted the paperwork to the city and is in the process of obtaining the banner and flyers.  He needs help with the flyers  and posting them around.  Also, he’s asking for members to post this event on social media etc. He’s contacting Nate at the Farmer’s Market about advertising the YEM there.  Karissa mentioned that Amy of the DDA is looking to help the youths with funding and that the owner of the Up Cycle Boutique is looking to feature the YEM youths in her shop.
    8. Tent Hal & Cheryl: A demo was given of the club’s new tent with the club’s name and Civitan info on it.  There was a slight discrepancy as to the date the club was founded, it showed 1972 which is the date the Plymouth-Canton Civitan Club was founded instead of 2017 when KVCC was founded.  Hal offered to pay for the correction.  Thad made a motion and Rich seconded it to accept the tent with the 1972 date and make no correction as this lettering with the 1972 date is near the bottom and likely won’t be seen by the public.  Motion passed.
    9. Music on the Grand-Karissa: The first date is June 21st which is also Volunteer Appreciation Night.  The music will be a Beatles Tribute.  The club will do children’s crafts and Nazmiye will do face painting. There’ll be food trucks on site.  Members need to show up around 5 PM to set up the tent and organize the crafts.  This will be held at Inspiration Park in front of the United Methodist Church located at 56870 Grand River Ave, New Hudson 48165.  July 19th and August 2nd are the other dates the club will run the crafts for children.  The series runs from June 7th-August 16th  and they’re in need of volunteers.  Here’s the link to volunteer:

  1. Focus Hope: May 20th-Theresa:  The Plymouth-Canton Civitan Club has invited KVCC to participate with building food boxes of lower-income families and senior citizens.   Meet at the Costco parking lot (Middle Belt Rd. and I-96 service drive) by 8:30 AM to carpool to Focus Hope.  You can also meet down at Focus Hope by 9 AM located at: 1400 Oakman Blvd. Detroit 48238.  Parking is directly across the street within the gated black fence.  Lot entrance is on LaSalle Blvd. There’ll be another food box build scheduled for October 14th. Afterward there’ll be lunch at Polonia’s.
  2. Pumpkinfest September 30th-October 1st-Theresa: Application has been submitted, awaiting notification of location.  Requested on Lake St. near the theater.  Set up is scheduled for Saturday morning 7-9 AM. with booth opening at 10 AM and scheduled to run until 7 PM.  Sunday hours are 11-6 PM.  We’ll have the Duck Pond game again. Karissa stated that S. Lyon Live is hosting the event and can be found on Facebook.   
  3. Pontiac Trail Rd. Cleanup April 22nd-Diana:  Meet at the New Hudson Biggby at 10 AM.  Elijah has vests and grabbers.  Need more trash bags.  Diana will contact Sue to see if she’ll be back and pick up the trash bags.  Next cleanup date is scheduled for September 23rd.
  4. Desert Angels Packing Party-Karissa: Still scheduled for November 16th. The newest member Carol has already started collecting items.
  5. Inspired Movement Demo-Thad: Gave a demo of how it works with promoting physical activity. Thad will be meeting with Sue the Special Ed Director and giving her a demo within the next couple of weeks. (Demo was given after the meeting was adjourned at 8:05 PM.)
  6. Volunteer Opportunities-Karissa: Music on the Grand is looking for volunteers to work on the series.  See 5i for link.  Karissa is setting up a donation box at the New Hudson Biggby location for Chuck Waggin Pet Food Pantry  collection of pet food and treats for cats and dogs.  Collection goes through May 15th.
  7. American Brain Tumor Association BT5K (just added by Cheryl): Larry Berg who spoke at the March business meeting is looking for volunteers to work the run/walk.  It’ll be at the Kensington Metro park located at 4570 Huron River Parkway in Milford from 6 AM to Noon. Theresa made a motion  and Rich seconded that the club be a sponsor by donating  to the BT5k.  Motion passed.  By being a sponsor, the club will get an In-person Morning Program Mention, an Event Tent, and two complimentary BT5K registrations.  The tent and registrations will be discussed further at the April dinner meeting.
