Present:  Thad Bogert, Rich Roberts, Hal Hultman, Cheryl VanVliet, Julie Pelletier, Sue Misener, Diana Bolton, Phil Crutchfield, Theresa Furget, Paulina Poplawska and Maureen Posler.
Thad called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM.
  1. Additions & Corrections: No additions or corrections. Motion to approve agenda made by Diana and seconded by Rich. Motion carried.
  2. Minutes of Last Meeting: Motion to accept minutes of May 12, 2022 meeting made by Rich and seconded by Maureen.  All approved.
  3. Treasurer’s Report: Theresa reviewed the MP and the General accounts.  There were no changes to the MP account. For the General Account, 3 members paid dues. Theresa mentioned that she sent a follow-up email to members with overdue dues. 2 club members are seriously behind in dues.  Even though we have not received dues from individuals, Theresa has to pay dues for those same members to International every quarter. Theresa paid the State of Michigan Non-Profit Corporation Fee and the North Central District Dues/Convention Delegate fees.  Next month, Diana, Cheryl and Theresa will be added to the MP account for easier access to funds.  Phil and Karissa will remain on the account and Rich is stepping down. Rich made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s repost and Hal seconded. Motion to accept carried.

  1. Guest Speaker:  Julie Hines, 3rd Grade Teacher, Maybury Elementary School in Southwest Detroit came to speak to the group.  Julie teaches English Language Arts. She teaches for half of a day and is a coach to other teachers the remainder of the day. Maybury is a Title 1 school, meaning it is low income. Julie would like to promote reading and literature and her goal is to build up a home library for kids in her classroom.  The school does not have a library; however, there is space for a library in a trailer on school property. To begin this project, shelving and books are needed. Julie talked about a website (donorschoose.org) where donations can be made for shelving and books could be purchased from Scholastic Books. The shelving that Julie described is approximately $1,300. Rich made a motion for $2,000 to be donated for the Maybury Library project to purchase shelving and the remainder of funds, after shelving, to purchase books. The money for this project will come from the MP account. Diana seconded the motion and the motion passed.  There may be other options for shelving, such as Amazon or other sites/donations.  Thad suggested a presentation ceremony for the donation. Thad is the lead on this project.

  1. Correspondence: None

  1. 2022-2023 President: Sue Misener will not be able to serve as President for 2022-2023 due to family commitments. Thad Bogert will step in as President and also remain as President-Elect. The club asked for volunteers to fill the President-Elect position.  If no one volunteers, Thad will have to serve two years as President. The officers for 2022-2023 are:  Thad Bogert – President & President-Elect, Diana Bolton – Treasurer; Theresa – Secretary. Installation of officers must take place in September since their term of office begins October 1. The next Business meeting will be on September 8, 2022 the South Lyon Library and the installation of officers will take place at this business meeting.

  1. North Central District 2022 Convention:  The convention will take place from August 26-28, 2022 in South Bend, Indiana.  This will be the last district meeting due to the Civitan reorganization.  As of the meeting, Cheryl, Hal, Paulina & Theresa are attending.  Cheryl & Hal will take the KVCC banner.

  1. Growth Committee Discussion:
    1. Youth Entrepreneur Market:  The most recent Youth Entrepreneur Market took place on 8/13/2022.  The club had a great turn out, in terms of participants! 10 youths prepared booths, set up the booth and products and sold products from 10:00 AM until approximately 2:20 PM.  All the youths appeared excited and most claimed that they made money and would be back next month.  It would have been great if we had more foot traffic, however those that came seemed to make purchases.  The next and last Youth Entrepreneurs Market, for this year, will take place on September 10, 2022.  PLEASE spread the word on your Facebook & social media pages/sites.  The market will begin again in June 2023.   There was also discussion of purchasing a tent with our logo information for use at the market and various other events.  The Plymouth-Canton Club is purchasing a tent, so Hal recapped options and timing with a local vendor for the KVCC Club.
    2. Desert Angels Packing Party:  Our next Desert Angels Packing Party will be in October.  Please start collecting items that can be donated for the troops.  An announcement was made for those attending the NC District convention for donations.  Donations that are made at the conference will be brought back for the packing party. The Plymouth-Canton Civitan Club is donating $500 towards mailing costs or other miscellaneous expenses. In addition the Fort Dodge Civitan Club would like to participate and will write notes to the soldiers that can be included with the packages. Karissa will decide on the final date.

  1. 5-Year Celebration: The club’s 5-Year Anniversary Celebration will be held at the Riverbank Golf Club, located at Currie and 10 mile roads.  Set-up will be at 5:30 PM.  Volunteers are needed for set-up. The motion presented included a dinner cost of $25.00/member or guest. The Youth Entrepreneur students will be attending and the club will pay for their dinners. In addition, the Club will pay $10 towards dinner for the parent(s) of the Youth Entrepreneur Market students. Money that the club will pay will come out of the General Account. Thad will create a way to allow payment through PayPal and see if there is a way to handle RSVP’s through Pay Pal.  A subcommittee was formed to plan the details for the celebration.  Members include Diana, Thad, Sue & Theresa. Mark your calendars for September 22, 2022 for our 5-year Anniversary celebration.  Phil made a motion to accept the proposal for dinner costs and Sue seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

  1. Fruitcake: In past years, the Pontiac Civitan Club picked up and delivered annual fruitcakes to various stores and locations that sell the fruitcakes.  The Pontiac Club is folding and this job is up for grabs.  Cheryl explained the details of what is involved.  There is a payment of a little over $4,000 for this job.  However, it involves significant driving around Metro Detroit and is very labor intensive.  The club members present opted to pass on this opportunity.

  1. Project Updates:
    1. Inspire Movement (Digital Playspace) Project: Thad reported that in order to have the equipment to make presentations about the digital playspace, we would need a projector, camera, computer and a stand for the computer.  It is possible that we could obtain a second-hand projector or obtain a projector from one of the schools.  Estimated equipment costs would be between $810 & $1,505.  These costs do not include any maintenance or electrical labor costs.
  1. Music on the Grand: The country night “Music on the Grand” was very successful!  The Kid’s Craft Table made windsocks and a lot of them were made!  A woman whose son made a windsock expressed interest in joining the club.

  1. Upcoming Projects:
    1. South Lyon Pumpkinfest:  Event will take place on September 24 (9:00 AM – 7:00 PM) and September 25 (11:00 AM – 6:00 PM).  The club needs to collect 300 – 500 small to medium stuffed animals that are in good, clean condition for prizes.  Please ask your friends to see if they have any to donate and post on your social media pages.  Many of us have bags of stuffed animals that our kids collected over the years and are just taking up space in our basements.  Other than stuffed animals, we will need a total of 1,200 - 1,500 prizes. Thad will check to see how many LED rings he has left from prior years and will order additional rings.
    2. Adopt-A-Highway: The next planned highway clean-up is Saturday, Oct. 1 and the rain day will be on Sunday, October 2.
    3. Focus Hope: The next Focus Hope box packing will take place on October 8, 2022. The Plymouth- Canton Club is looking for volunteers to help pack boxes.

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be a dinner meeting on August 25, 2022 at the Teresita Mexican Grill at 6:30 PM.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Phil and seconded by Rich. The motion carried.
