Present: Julie Pelletier, Karissa & Elijah Canfield, Thad Bogert, Diana Bolton, Cheryl Van Vliet, Hal Hultman, and Maureen Posler

Elijah called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM.
  1. Additions & Corrections: None.
  2. Minutes of Last Meeting: Minutes were tabled until next meeting.
  3. Treasurer’s Report:  A Treasurer’s report was not presented. Elijah advised the members present that Helene will need to temporarily step down as Treasurer. A new Treasurer will be needed.  Elijah asked if an election was necessary for a new treasurer. Cheryl responded that someone could volunteer to take on the treasurer responsibilities or an election could be held.  Whoever takes on the treasurer responsibilities will need to obtain the records from Helene or Phil and review procedures.
  4. Correspondence: None.
  5. NC Civitan Membership Retention & Growth Committee: It was decided at the last meeting to have a discussion on growth within our meetings rather than a separate committee.  Elijah led the group through an exercise where everyone wrote an anonymous statement on what they wanted the KVCC to be.  It was interesting that most of the statements had a common theme of being more active in the community which might also be an opportunity to interest more community members to join our club.  There was also conversation about how many successful groups have a very dynamic and informational web site.  Elijah mentioned the Plymouth Canton web site which has lots of event pictures and newsletters on it. Maureen sent Elijah newsletters and minutes for most of the past year and he will format and figure out how to post on the web site.  He did say the web site needed a volunteer who would keep it updated. Another idea discussed was to have a “Member Spotlight” section in the newsletter. This would result in members knowing more about each other and if we put newsletters on the web site, members would see more about us personally and perhaps know someone in the club which might incent people to join as well. Other events that might generate attention and participation in the community were discussed such as a game night.  We decided to do a “Desert Angels” package party where we invite the community to participate in packing boxes for troops overseas. Anyone with connections to local businesses that could reach out for donations would be appreciated.
  6. Civitan Youth Entrepreneurs Committee: Nothing much has happened with this initiative. Elijah met with Nick of the DDA and Nick’s concern was that the youth initiative could be seen as competing with the Farmer’s Market.  It was suggested that we combine efforts with the Farmer’s Market. KVCC could co-market with them.  Cheryl reached out to International to see if we could get less expensive liability insurance for the group. So far there has been no response.  Cheryl reached out again and if there is no response by this week, the club will go with another insurance that was sourced out.
  7. Health & Wellness Project Grant:  Thad has taken the lead on this and applied for a grant from South Lyon to fund an initiative titled “Inspired Movement Project”.  The project is to promote physical activity by implementing Digital Play Spaces that inspire participants with intellectual and developmental disabilities to interact or play with objects projected on a wall or floor using their hands or feet.  KVCC would provide a play spot to South Lyon Community Schools at no cost to the district.  Thad passed out an excellent summary that describes Digital Play Spaces and a tentative budget.  Please see Thad for more information or a copy of the summary.

Projects Updates:
  1. Charity Poker: The next Charity Poker event will be March 24-27, 2022 at Vision Lanes in Westland.  Phil will be sending a “Sign-Up Genius” for volunteers to schedule time.  There is a big concern that we will not have enough volunteers to staff the event.  This would put our club in a bad light and jeopardize future events.  The Charity Poker events are a major fundraising source for KVCC.  We would not find another such opportunity to generate funds if this falls through. PLEASE SIGN UP FOR A SHIFT OR TWO!  The next scheduled charity poker is May 19-22, 2022
  2. North Central District Spring Meeting: This meeting is scheduled to be held April 22-24 at the Hampton Inn & Suites, 1921 Pipestone Rd., Benton Harbor, MI 49085.  The phone # is 269-827-5878. If you are interested in attending, book your hotel room by March 12th and register by April 1st.
  3. South Lyon Creek Clean-up: Club members interested in participating in this community event can register to volunteer on their web site.
  4. Adopt-A-Highway: The highway clean-up is scheduled for April; however available dates have not been published on the city web site.  Once information is available, Diana will pass it on to club members.
  5. Camp Civitan: Camp Civitan will be held June 9-12, 2022.  Cheryl was pleased to report that there was only a small increase in cost per camper for 2022.  The increase was from $157- 168/camper. Cheryl brought Michigan raffle tickets for members to sell or buy.  This is a major fundraiser for Camp Civitan.  Plan on purchasing tickets at the next meeting and taking tickets to sell to friends and family.
  6. Focus Hope: The next box packing event is scheduled for October 8th.
Next Meetings:
The next meeting will be a dinner meeting on February 24, 2022.  Please note a location change:  The dinner meeting will be held at the Pinz Bowling Center, 700N. Lafayette Rd., South Lyon, MI.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 PM

  • Minutes taken on February 9, 2022 and respectfully submitted on February 14, 2022.
