June 9TH, 2022 MEETING MINUTES

6/20/2022

Present:  Elijah Canfield, Thad Bogert, Theresa Furget, Rich Roberts, Paulina Poplawska and Maureen Posler.  Also a guest speaker named Paige George.

Elijah called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM.

  1. Additions & Corrections: No additions or corrections.
  2. Guest Speaker: Paige George from the South Lyon Community Coalition (SLCC). The SLCC serves the South Lyon Community School District and residents of Lyon Township, New Hudson and South Lyon as well as partnering with other coalitions throughout Oakland County. The goal of SLCC is to make a positive impact on the youth of the target areas and to bring programs that help youth make healthy life choices that prevent drug and alcohol  use.  A key issue is the use of vaping among youth. Through discussions and table talks at each school, the hope is to educate youth about what chemicals are in the vaping and its detrimental impact.  Another initiative is prescription recalls and drop offs.  A recent initiative at Abbey Park Senior center resulted in 5 pounds of old RX drugs being turned in.  Page George is the Director of SLCC.  She went through Narcan training.  SLCC is funded entirely through grants.  Paige came from a corporate environment and she wants to partner with groups like KVCC since getting involved in the community has been a struggle.  Paige runs a “court” session where a teen who has been ticketed for vaping or alcohol use can go to “court”, where Paige and a judge speaks to the offender.  Once the “court is completed, the ticket and fine goes away for a first offense.  The youngest child to participate was 11 and the oldest was 20.  In our area, heroin is the biggest drug of choice where on the west side of the state, Meth is the drug of choice.  Paige also visits liquor and drug stores to ensure that signage is correct and to remind store owners to check ID’s. Paige would like to partner with KVCC to get out into the community.
  3. Minutes of Last Meeting: Motion to accept minutes of May 12, 2022 meeting made by Thad Bogert and seconded by Rich Roberts.
  4. Treasurer’s Report: Theresa presented the Treasurer’s report for both the General Account and the MP account.  Please let Theresa Furget know if you would like a copy of the report with specifics. Rich Roberts made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report and Thad Bogert seconded the motion.  Motion was approved.
    1. Desert Angels Biggby Match:  There was an outstanding item about the Biggby match for the Desert Angels project.  At the last meeting the club agreed to spend for the Biggby Match program.  A motion was needed to pay what was owed on the program.  Rich Roberts made a motion to approve paying for the Biggby Match Program. Paulina seconded the motion and motion was approved.
    2. Charity Poker: KVCC had a very successful Charity Poker weekend.
  5. Correspondence: A thank you letter from Feed America, at the North Central District Meeting was received for KVCC’s donation.  The voting delegates at the meeting confirmed an email was received from International about the voting process at the International Convention as well as an email to verify email addresses.
  6. 2022 Civitan International Elections & Voting:  The convention will be held in San Antonio, Texas, from July 4-7, 2022.  Delegates can attend virtually as well as in person.  Each club has a certain number of votes, based on size.  KVCC has 3 votes. Thad Bogart, Diana Bolton and Maureen Posler will be the delegates for KVCC and all are attending the convention virtually.  Voting will take place on July 5, 2022.
  7. North Central District 2022 Convention:  The convention begins on August 27th with Fun and Fellowship with games, Euchre and possibly bridge, if there is enough interest.  The day continues with the answer to “What is next for the North Central District” and possibly some awards.  Saturday evening will wrap up the convention with dinner and final awards.  This the last convention for the NC District since districts are going away in the new Civitan organizational structure. With the dues that KVCC pays to International, the club pays for two attendees at the convention.  If anyone is interested in representing KVCC, please let Elijah know. A registration form was passed out for the NC District Meeting.  Reservations at the Hyatt Place South Bend/Mishawaka hotel must be made by July 25th.  Club officers planning on attending, need to let Marta know and she will book your room on a master list.  Let Marta know by July 19th. There are two reasons to consider attending.  First, as previously noted, this will be the last NC District Convention and second, since Thad Bogert will be presenting the Inspire Movement Project, this will be an opportunity to promote KVCC.
  8. Growth Committee:
    1. Youth Entrepreneur Market: The next Youth Entrepreneur Market will take place on June 11 next to the South Lyon Biggby.  There are approximately 8 youths participating and their sales include jewelry and paintings.  Elijah & Karissa have been working with the students.  Most are high school age, however, there is one 20 year old that is disabled and has an amazing skill.  She can paint with her eyes using technology.  Please spread the word on your social media to visit the Youth Entrepreneur group at the monthly meetings.
  9. Project Updates:
    1. South Lyon Scholarships: Kris Krzyzanski presented the scholarship checks to the winners at the Seniors Honor Nights on June 7th & 8th at the two South Lyon High Schools.
    2. South Lyon Memorial Day Parade:  KVCC did not participate in the parade.  With charity Poker and a number of other events, there were not enough volunteers to participate.
    3. Inspire Movement (Digital Playspace Project: Thad Bogert was invited to make a presentation about the Inspire Movement Project at the International Convention.  Thad will make the presentation virtually with a video on how the project works and what KVCC hopes to accomplish.  With the end of the school year fast approaching, implementation is sort of at a standstill.  The implementation should start at a faster pace when the new school year starts.
  10. Upcoming Projects:
    1. Music on the Grand: KVCC will have a booth at the June 15 Music on the Grand event.  The location is the New Hudson United Methodist Church.  The June 15 night’s theme is Blues. If you are interested in volunteering, the time is from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The other night that KVCC will have a booth/activities will be on July 27, which is Country Night. Music on the Grand takes place every other Wednesday.
    2. South Lyon Pumpkinfest:  Pumpkinfest will take place on September 24 from 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM (set-up at 7- 9 AM) – September 25 from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM. We will have discussion at future meetings about what prizes to give out, how much to spend, etc.
    3. Adopt-A-Highway: The next planned highway clean-up is Saturday, Oct. 1 and the rain day will be on Sunday, October 2.
    4. Focus Hope: The next Focus Hope box packing will take place on October 8, 2022.

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be a dinner meeting on June 23, 2022 at the Teresita Mexican Grill at 6:30 PM.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Elijah Canfield at 7:37 PM and seconded by Thad Bogert.
Minutes taken on June 9, 2022 and respectfully submitted on June 11, 2022 by Maureen Posler.
