​Present: Diana Bolton, Phil Crutchfield, Thad Bogert, Carol Sienko, Julie Pelletier, Paulina Poplawski, and Theresa Furget. Guest: Tim Root, he has participated in Desert Angels packing party and his children participate in the Youth Entrepreneur Market.
Thad called the meeting to order at 6:30 PM.
  1. Additions & Corrections: None.
  2. Minutes Approval-April 11th, 2024: Phil made a motion and Carol seconded it to accept the April minutes. Motion passed.
  3. Treasurer’s Report: Diana went over the general and MP accounts for May. Phil made a motion and Carol seconded it to accept the treasure’s report. Motion passed.
  4. Correspondence: None.
  5. Project Updates:
    1. Officer Election for 2024-2025: Need a member to run for president elect. Diana Bolton will continue as treasurer if no one else is interested in taking over this position. Theresa Furget will remain as secretary and Elijah Canfield  is the incoming president.
    2. CI Convention: Will be held in Albuquerque, NM August 4th-7th, at the Embassy Suites by Hilton with room rates at $159 plus tax. This includes breakfast and the manager’s afternoon reception. Further details can be found at: https://civitan.org/convention/.
    3. Youth Leadership and Diversity Conference (YLDC) July 7th-12th: The cost is $375 per delegate. Vivian’s great granddaughter Alyssa Gall will be attending on a KVCC scholarship. Diana has submitted the payment to YLDC.
    4. Camp Civitan June 6th-9th: Theresa reported that Cheryl has about 62 campers attending. She’s all set with counselors, nurse and has enough bingo prizes.
    5. 20th Annual S. Lyon Area Creek Cleanup Report: Thad reported that it was a cold day, still had over 100 participants, which included a large group of high schoolers getting their community service hours in. They ran out of hot chocolate and just had a few granola bars and banana’s left over. A lot of trash was hauled out of the creek.
    6. Adopt-a-Rd Cleanup Report: A large group participated which made it go faster. There wasn’t a lot of trash as would be expected after winter. It was the normal trash, except Diana had an interesting item-a skeleton. She showed the picture of the skeleton which was a small plastic size that probably went on a key chain.
    7. Essay Scholarships: Thad read the note from Maureen indicating the committee chose four winners (two from each school) that were all deserving of a scholarship. Julie made a motion and Paulina seconded it to give each winner a $1000 scholarship (for a total of $4000) from the MP account. Motion passed. The winners are JD Burch, Shaylin LeBlanc, Ravneet Minhas, and Kylie Rumberger. Theresa gave the letters to the winners for Thad to sign, and she’ll deliver them to Cheryl on Friday so they can be mailed. Paulina stated the S. Lyon High School winners will be awarded on June 5th; she doesn’t know when S. Lyon East will have their event.
    8. Charity Poker: This is currently ongoing. Theresa indicated that Hal was able to get two of the Plymouth-Canton Civitan Club members (Mary Stewart and Gary Turnquist) to fill in as the runners for Saturday and Sunday’s event from 10 AM-6 PM.
    9. Youth Entrepreneur Market (YEM) May 11th: Thad indicated that Mary of the Farmer’s Market will be posting on their website about the YEM. Theresa indicated that the Greater Brighton Area Chamber of Commerce will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9:45 AM. Theresa has the cookies and Thad will buy some water. Karissa will be supplying the hot chocolate from Biggby. Members need to arrive at 9 AM to help set up the tent. Bring your own chair.
    10. Music on the Grand June 12th:  This goes from 6-8 PM. Members need to arrive around 5 PM to help set up the tent and organize the craft for the kids. Not sure if Nazmiye will do facepainting . Bring your own chair.
    11. Focus Hope May 18th: Theresa explained this is a food box build for low-income families and senior citizens. Gary contacted her requesting the help of KVCC members. Diana stated she’s going as is one of her kids. If interested, meet at the Costco parking lot located at I-96 and Middle Belt Rd at 8:15 AM to carpool down to Focus Hope. Otherwise, you can drive directly to Focus Hope (by 9 AM) located at  1400 Oakman Blvd, Detroit 48238. Parking (surrounded by a black fence) will be across the street from the building. Afterwards the group will go to lunch at Polonia’s and make a visit to the New Palace Bakery.
    12. Pumpkinfest September 28th-29th: Theresa reported that Cheryl and Hal have a game; Wheel of Chance that’ll be used as there are already two charities with a duck pond game. The application was submitted, and the fee has been paid. She requested  a Lake St. location, will just have to wait, and see where they put us.
  6. Dinner Meeting May 23rd at 6:30 PM at Teresita’s Mexican Grill.
  7. Adjournment Diana made a motion and Phil seconded it to adjourn the meeting at 7:15 PM. Motion passed.
